How to wash your hair with psoriasis: Shampoo as a remedy for symptoms
Psoriasis is a chronic disease, the symptoms of which lead to severe physical and psychological discomfort. Competent daily care helps to significantly improve the patient’s condition, achieve stable remission. The best way to wash your hair with psoriasis, which additional care is needed – we will tell you in this article.
General recommendations of dermatologists for scalp care with psoriasis
The scalp affected by psoriasis requires delicate care. Conventional shampoos, conditioners, lotions and other cosmetics are not suitable for this. Their components can cause irritation, inflammation and rashes, that is, provoke another relapse of the disease.
For daily care, dermatologists recommend using special products against psoriasis on the head – therapeutic shampoos. They eliminate irritation, relieve inflammation, accelerate the exfoliation of dead skin scales and prevent its further peeling. A dermatologist may also recommend additional therapeutic ointments, lotions, serums, or creams.

Components that are necessary in the composition of shampoo.
First of all, it is important to pay attention to the main active ingredient. Most often, it is tar, zinc, or salicylic acid.
- For active exfoliation of dead skin cells, one of the most effective substances is tar. Products based on it also reduce itching and irritation, have an antimicrobial effect.
- Zinc, like tar, reduces peeling and relieves inflammation, shampoos with this active ingredient effectively destroy microbes and fungal pathogens.
- Salicylic acid is recommended for exfoliating thick layers of dead skin.
In addition, the shampoo should include components that cleanse and moisturize, as well as substances that provide hair care. For example, lauroylamino acids of oats can act as a mild component for washing. Glycerin can be used to provide a moisturizing effect, which also accelerates regeneration and eliminates inflammation. For hair care, panthenol is often included in the composition of therapeutic shampoos, which restores and strengthens it. The composition also often contains substances with a conditioning effect that facilitate combing (for example, aminopropyl dimethicone).
How often should you wash your hair and why
The frequency of washing depends on your hair type. Dermatologists recommend washing dry hair no more than 2 times a week, normal and oily hair – as needed. Washing too often can further dehydrate the skin and damage the hair. If you need to wash your hair every day, it is important to use only shampoo that is intended for daily use.
